List of products by brand Cossart Gordon

Established by Francis Newton in 1745, Cossart Gordon & Co. holds the honour of being the oldest company in the Madeira wine trade. Francis Newton, a young Scot, arrived in Madeira on 12 September 1745 and founded the firm. Over time it was joined by his brother Thomas and later by Thomas Gordon of Balmaghie. By the mid-19th century, the company was flourishing: shipping “half the growth of the island”, particularly to discerning markets in North America. Madeira wines from their cellars became synonymous with prestige; so much so that “America Madeira” was a common term for the best selections.

In 1808, William Cossart, of Irish-Huguenot descent, came into the firm, and later his nephew Peter. The company name evolved to Newton, Gordon, Cossart, and after further changes, settled into Cossart, Gordon & Co. As centuries passed, the firm shifted focus entirely to Madeira wine, foregoing its former portfolio of Port, Sherry, Marsala and other wines. Today, Cossart Gordon Madeiras continue to be regarded among the finest available, carrying forward a tradition rooted in craftsmanship, history and the unique terroir of the island.
