Cossart Gordon 5 Years Old Bual Madeira is crafted from high-quality Bual grapes grown in vineyards around Campanário and Calheta, at elevations between 100-300 m. The wine is fermented off the skins with natural yeast in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks (18-21 °C), and about three days in the process it is fortified with grape brandy to preserve a natural residual sweetness. It then ages via the traditional ‘Canteiro’ method in American oak casks, gently heated in Funchal lodges, moving through different levels of aging from hot lofts down to cooler ground floors. After aging, it is filtered and bottled.
On the palate, Cossart Gordon 5 Years Old Bual Madeira shows a clear amber colour with hints of gold. Aromas of dried fruit, vanilla, wood and toffee fill the nose. The palate is medium-sweet, smooth, and rounded, balancing fruitiness with vibrant acidity. With 19% alcohol, around 85 g/L sugar, and an acidity of 6.5 g/L (tartaric), this wine shines as an after-dinner treat and pairs beautifully with fruit, milk chocolate, cakes or strong cheeses. It’s bottled ready to enjoy, and remains good for several months after opening.
