Cossart Gordon Bual Colheita 2005 Madeira Wine

Cossart Gordon’s Colheita Bual 2005 is a vintage Madeira wine made entirely from Bual grapes. After harvest, the wine undergoes fermentation off the skins with natural yeasts in stainless-steel tanks, then is fortified to preserve sweetness. It is aged in oak casks following the traditional canteiro method, allowing gradual exposure to temperature variation in the Madeira lodges, which develops depth, complexity and a characteristic oxidative character over time.

On tasting, Colheita Bual 2005 displays a rich amber-gold colour with reflections of old gold. Aromas are complex and mature, with dried fruits, caramel, toasted nuts and hints of orange peel. The palate is rich and luscious but balanced by vibrant acidity; flavours of fig, honey, and walnut linger in a long finish. With its established vintage character, this Madeira is wonderful as an after-dinner wine or paired with desserts, nuts or cheese.

Therefore they started storing as much Madeira Wine as possible, letting it slowly mature inside the barrels for future generations to be able to enjoy it further. For that reason, D’Oliveiras is the only Madeira Wine company that owns Madeira Wine bottles and Barrels from as far as the 1850’s that can still be commercially purchased.

Barbeito & Niepoort Os Mestres

Blending together grape varieties continues to be a relatively rare practice when it comes to Madeira wine. Ricardo Diogo and Dirk Niepoort tasted the various batches used for this dry “Reserva Especial” directly out of the barrels in one of the “Vinhos Barbeito” winery’s cellars.

Notes of star anise, touches of stalkiness from the stems, apricots, macerated fruit, and hints of caramel. Tropical flavours appear on the wine’s pleasantly round but also structured palate. The wine’s crisp acidity leads into a beautifully dry finish.

HM Borges Malvasia 50 Years Old has a brownish topaz colour with orange reflections. The palate has an intoxicating, clean, elegant and extremely complex flavour. Well-structured acidity and body in harmony with the sweetness and tannins. Sweet wine, very full-bodied and rich in old cask aromas where toasted almonds, vanilla with hints of iodine, tobacco and caramel predominate.

The wine is aged in French and American oak casks, in the traditional process until bottling.

This wine is delicious with dried fruit, especially walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts. It pairs well with dried fruit cakes, honey cakes, butter biscuits, dark or milk chocolate, pralines and petit-fours. It's a wine that is elegant with Portuguese and blue cheeses or even simply with a good cigar
