It is typically made from a blend of native Portuguese varieties such as Tinta Miúda, Trincadeira, Castelão, and occasionally Syrah. The grapes undergo full destemming, extended skin maceration, and controlled fermentation, followed by aging in French oak barrels (around six months, depending on the vintage).
