The story of Dow’s is unusual amongst all the great Port houses. It began in 1798 when Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, made a journey which was the opposite to that of the first British merchants. The Port shipping business was continued by Bruno’s son, John da Silva who in 1862 brought into partnership Frederick William Cosens. With the continuing expansion of the firm, Edward da Silva and Frederick Cosens were joined by George Acheson Warre, whose well known family had been involved in the Port trade since its earliest years. In 1877, Silva & Cosens merged with another leading Port company, Dow & Co.

Although smaller than Silva & Cosens, Dow & Co had become a very highly regarded Port producer with a particularly fine reputation for its Vintage Ports and when the two companies merged, it was decided to adopt DOW’S as the brand name

For over two centuries the name of DOW has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families.

Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house

Noia Red Wine was inspired, dreamt up and designed from the Sangiovese, Touriga Franca and Alicante Bouschet grape varieties. The inspiration comes from the magnificent landscape of our vineyards, where the vines grow and produce high quality grapes with extraordinary potential. To design the wine was to elaborate the final blend precisely and surgically. Potentiating the tannic structure of the Sangiovese with the freshness and youthfulness of the Touriga Franca and enveloping it in the cocoa, mint and spice flavours of the Alicante Bouschet.... This wine is faithful, with a unique identity and complicity

Pequeno Eremita is an organic wine crafted by the esteemed winemaker, António Maçanita. It is part of the Fitapreta project and produced under the umbrella of the Chão dos Eremitas range, in the DOC Alentejo. This unique creation is the result of a meticulous process that combines traditional methods with a modern twist, embodying a fusion of age-old viticultural roots and a vibrant, youthful identity.

The wine aims to bring a fresh and youthful identity to a historical terroir with deep roots in Portuguese viticulture. The harvest is done manually and at night. The wine undergoes spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation (without the addition of sulfites until the end of fermentation). The aging process is performed over static lees: 66% in stainless steel deposits and 33% in used French oak barrels for 9 months. This careful process ensures the creation of a wine that captures the rich essence of its origins, while also embodying a unique identity of its own.
