Quinta de La Rosa Vintage 2009 Port Wine (375ml)

Quinta de la Rosa Vintage 2009 boasts a stunning deep dark purple/red hue, accompanied by complex black cherry aromas with cedary undertones, typical of a young vintage port. The integration of the brandy with the 'wine' element is seamless, preventing any spirit burn. The outcome is a finely balanced port that is rich and ripe, yet maintains freshness, equilibrium, and elegance, all culminating in a long, lingering finish.

All ports at Quinta de la Rosa are made in the ‘house style’ namely slightly drier without any cloying sweetness that is often associated with ports. As in their wines, they search for balance, harmony and equilibrium from their vineyards and we try to enable the grapes to express themselves in the bottle. The La Rosa style is to make well defined wines without too much extraction and tannin

Tasting Notes
The port has enormous concentration of colour, great aromatic complexity, blackberry, blackcurrant and with a hint of mint flavours. On the palate, the port is very full bodied, with enveloping mature, ripe tannins and grip so that it will age well
Vinification
The port was trodden by foot in granite lagares for three to four days with temperature control. Before doing this, we pulled off some free run juice (to make into Rosé) giving extra concentration to the final port

The story of Dow’s is unusual amongst all the great Port houses. It began in 1798 when Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, made a journey which was the opposite to that of the first British merchants. The Port shipping business was continued by Bruno’s son, John da Silva who in 1862 brought into partnership Frederick William Cosens. With the continuing expansion of the firm, Edward da Silva and Frederick Cosens were joined by George Acheson Warre, whose well known family had been involved in the Port trade since its earliest years. In 1877, Silva & Cosens merged with another leading Port company, Dow & Co.

Although smaller than Silva & Cosens, Dow & Co had become a very highly regarded Port producer with a particularly fine reputation for its Vintage Ports and when the two companies merged, it was decided to adopt DOW’S as the brand name

For over two centuries the name of DOW has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families.

Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house.

Quinta de la Rosa port wine is made each year in the traditional manner, trodden in granite lagares from grapes grown at Quinta de la Rosa. Each year they keep back a small quantity of their best ports LBV quality and above. It is from these stocks that they blend their Tonel 12. This blending occurs on a regular basis to ensure that stocks are always fresh. For many years, before 1988, when they started selling port under the La Rosa brand, the Bergqvist family used to go down to 'Tonel 12' (a large 25 pipe barrel kept in the lodge under the house) and fill their decanter full of delicious ten year old tawny direct from the barrel. To this day they still refer to Tonel 12, instead of ten year old tawny, and decided to keep the name on the label

Quinta de la Rosa Tawny 30 year old has a beautiful amber colour showing its age well. The long, slow maturation in old wooden pipes (550L barrels) has given this magnificent wine enormous elegance and complexity. On the nose, slightly dried fruit aromas with touches of balsamic vinegar, coffee and exotic wood are just some of its components. On the palate, it is simply delicious, almost light but with incredible intensity of flavour, soft, mouth filling with great persistence.
