Comboio do Vesúvio 2020 Red Wine

Comboio do Vesúvio Red Wine reveals pure aromas of red fruits and floral notes of rockrose and Mediterranean bushy vegetation. On the palate stand out definite flavors of wild berries with some herbaceous notes where fennel (quite typical in Vesuvius wines) stands out.

The Symington family, with Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry has been present in the Douro for five generations — since 1882 — and through the current generation’s great grandmother, the family’s links to the wines of the Douro span 14 generations, to the mid-17th century and to the very beginnings of the history of Port

The story of Dow’s is unusual amongst all the great Port houses. It began in 1798 when Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, made a journey which was the opposite to that of the first British merchants. The Port shipping business was continued by Bruno’s son, John da Silva who in 1862 brought into partnership Frederick William Cosens. With the continuing expansion of the firm, Edward da Silva and Frederick Cosens were joined by George Acheson Warre, whose well known family had been involved in the Port trade since its earliest years. In 1877, Silva & Cosens merged with another leading Port company, Dow & Co.

Although smaller than Silva & Cosens, Dow & Co had become a very highly regarded Port producer with a particularly fine reputation for its Vintage Ports and when the two companies merged, it was decided to adopt DOW’S as the brand name

For over two centuries the name of DOW has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families.

Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house

Exposure to the north is one of the key points, favoring a slow maturation of grapes: the altitude offers warm temperatures, the river breeze cools the vineyards at night. The average slope of 80% prevents mechanization, requiring an "heroic" viticulture. All work is manual, a century-old heritage that we want to keep, in respect for the age of the vines and the quality of the grapes. The low yields are inherent to this type of vines, without irrigation, in low fertility and a slightly acid pH schist soils.

In the oldest wine region in the world, the Quinta da Penalva or Perdiz was born in the 1990s. This arose from the joining of small plots of land, mostly old vines, inherited from ancestors for whom the cultivation of vines was of little secret, as they had always done it. Later, and already with the current owner, more parcels were added, thus joining the old vines to new plantations, cultivated using the most recent planting techniques
