At the gates of the city of Estremoz we find Quinta do Mouro, named by Mark Squires as the best wine producer in Alentejo.
For centuries Quinta do Mouro belonged to the Zagalos family but in 1979 was acquired by Miguel Louro. He is the soul of this project, known for saying what he thinks and likes to contradict those who debate ideas with him. All this is reflected in what he produces: atypical wines full of personality, the result of innovation and experimentation, which refuse to please market trends, using their good (and sometimes bad!) genius to question established and surprising dogmas.
His goal, as a wine producer, was to create different and very high quality wines. To achieve this, he experimented and made adaptations over time. Miguel Louro realised that the key to achieving his goal was a peculiar viticulture, not only in terms of the careful choice of grape varieties, but also in terms of the unusual management of the vineyards, mostly planted in schist soils, with low productivity and without irrigation.
The adventure of this producer, in the world of wines, began in 1989, the year in which the first vineyards were planted. Currently with 33 ha of vines, the native varieties Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira, Arinto, Antão Vaz and Verdelho predominate, as well as the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Petit Syrah.
The wines from Quinta do Mouro have a strong personality, in constant evolution: serious and austere, singular, with remarkable acidity, freshness, great aging potential and an incredible gastronomic trend, they grow at each tasting, over time.
Besides the classic wines from the Quinta do Mouro (inevitable wines that express the essence of the Quinta do Mouro) and the monovarietal wines (which result from interpretations of the classic grape varieties), Miguel Louro also produces wines that he calls divagation / wanderings (wines that result from ramblings, (un)inspirations and deviations, in unique and limited editions).
