Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is the son of João Nicolau de Almeida, an oenologist who for many years designs profiles of the best wines in Ramos Pinto and grandson of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, the creator of Barca Velha. Mateus wanted to win the world and after having studied and worked in Bordeaux launched in 2003 a project of his own, the company Muxagat Vinhos.

Lives in Vila Nova de Foz Côa. He states that his wines are the reflection where he is inserted, they are an interpretation of reality. The grapes of its wines come mainly from Quinta do Monte Xisto, owned by the family and Quinta do Vale Cesteiros, in Mêda, owned by its partner Eduardo Lopes. Agriculture is done in a biological way, applying some concepts of biodynamic agriculture. The wine cellar now used is in the Mêda and the policy followed is to interfere as little as possible in winemaking, allowing the soil characteristics of the wine caste to develop and show up in wine, with constant and close monitoring of the works in the vineyard and wine cellar. Then there is maximum separation of the vinified plots and the non-use of extreme yeasts, leaving only indigenous yeasts to do their job, avoiding to the utmost transfers, collages and filtrations in order to respect the character of the wine.
