<p></p> <p>Fonseca has belonged to the first rank of Vintage Port producers since the nineteenth century. Its Vintage Ports are noted for their luscious fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age.</p> <p>This Brand was created in 1815 by two families, Fonseca and Monteiro. Then came the Guimaraens family who led the firm for over the century and established its reputation as a 'first growth' Vintage Port house. <p></p><p>The story of Dow’s is unusual amongst all the great Port houses. It began in 1798 when Bruno da Silva, a Portuguese merchant from Oporto, made a journey which was the opposite to that of the first British merchants. The Port shipping business was continued by Bruno’s son, John da Silva who in 1862 brought into partnership Frederick William Cosens. With the continuing expansion of the firm, Edward da Silva and Frederick Cosens were joined by George Acheson Warre, whose well known family had been involved in the Port trade since its earliest years. In 1877, Silva &amp; Cosens merged with another leading Port company, Dow &amp; Co.</p> <p>Although smaller than Silva &amp; Cosens, Dow &amp; Co had become a very highly regarded Port producer with a particularly fine reputation for its Vintage Ports and when the two companies merged, it was decided to adopt DOW’S as the brand name</p> <p>For over two centuries the name of DOW has been associated with the finest Port from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley. Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st, the Symington family has built on the legacy of the preceding Silva and Dow families.</p> <p>Dow’s attractive and distinctive drier finish is the recognisable hallmark of the wines from this great Port house.</p> <p></p> <p></p>

<p></p><p>The grapes of this lot were caught in 2012 and bottled wine in 2014 and were fermented in granite mills with foot treading and the wine aged in wooden barrels. <span>This Port shows a great structure with intense fruit character and soft ripe tannins.</span></p>

<p>On the palate, Cossard Gordon almsey 10 Years Old Madeira presents a warm chestnut colour with golden highlights. Aromas are rich and complex, featuring dried fruits, toffee and spices. The flavour is sweet, concentrated and full in the mouth, with layers of mellow fruits, citrus-like orange notes and spice, finishing long and delicious. It has an alcohol content of 19%, high residual sugar (~115 g/L) and total acidity of 6.5 g/L (tartaric). It is excellent with desserts, rich chocolate puddings, fruit-based sweets or cheeses, and remains stable for several months after opening.</p>

<p>On the nose, Cossart Gordon Rainwater Madeira offers a warm topaz colour with golden reflections, exuding classic aromas of dried fruit, orange peel, and gentle oak. The palate is fresh and balanced, underpinned by a firm citrus backbone that gives lift and structure. Sweetness (about 55 g/L residual sugar) is well matched by total acidity (6.00 g/L as tartaric acid, pH ≈ 3.4), culminating in a lingering, long finish. This Rainwater style Madeira requires no decanting and remains stable for several months once opened, making it both delightful on release and rewarding for those who savour Madeira’s character over time.<br /><br /></p>
