    Frei João is a classic red wine from the Bairrada DOC, crafted by the historic Caves São João. The blend is primarily composed of Baga—the emblematic grape of the region—alongside smaller percentages of Touriga Nacional, and occasionally other varieties such as Tinta Roriz, Syrah, or Merlot, depending on the vintage. The wine is traditionally vinified with full maceration in lagares and aged in a combination of French oak barrels and cement vats, maintaining the house’s legacy of producing age-worthy wines.

    Frei João Red Wine reveals aromas of ripe black fruits, dried figs, pine forest herbs, and gentle spice. On the palate, it is firm and structured, offering bright acidity, fine tannins, and a long, elegant finish. With time in bottle, it develops added complexity, showing notes of tobacco, leather, and earth, while preserving its freshness. Balanced and expressive, it pairs beautifully with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or traditional Portuguese dishes like roast lamb or leitão (suckling pig).
