Alfrocheiro Preto is an important grape variety in the production of red Portuguese wine, planted primarily in the Dão DOC and Alentejano VR. The grape Alfrocheiro Preto is a grape with misty origins, and It is thought to be relative of Pinot Noir. Today, the birthplace is assumed to be Portugal, and the wines from this grape are noted for their deep velvety texture, intense spiciness and approachability when young.

The Alfrocheiro Preto grows well in the Mediterranean style climate of the Dão in north central Portugal. The grape has been helped dramatically by Portugal’s inclusion into the EU in 1986. Instead of grapes going to the large co-ops for processing they are now sold to private companies which make wines with more distinction and sense of place.

Alvarelhão is a red wine grape grown in northern Portugal, and it is thought to have origins in the north of portugal, althought little is known of its ancestry.

Alvarelhão wine grape is blended into red wine in the Dão region, and It is said to be part of the port wine blend in the Douro.

Because of the surrounding region of Dão, the vine is both rough and hardy, having strong defenses against temperature extremes and inclement weather.

Also known as Tempranillo, Aragonez or Aragonês is a wine grape from the region of central Alentejo and Douro, playing an important role in the regional wine prodution.

In Alentejo Central it is known as Aragonez and used in red table wine blends of variable quality, while in the Douro it is known as Tinta Roriz and mainly used in blends to make port wine.

Has received new international attention since the 1980s due to an influx of new money and new world winemaking techniques. Most wines from this area is sold as either the Varietal and/or Vinho Regional Alentejano.
